Students dazzle diners at NRT Cook Off

Students and staff at North Regional TAFE’s Open Learning Centre (OLC) and Youth Access Re-engagement Program (YARP) joined forces to hold a MasterChef-style ‘Cook Off’ in Broome last month.

The collaborative project challenged students to put language, literacy and numeracy skills into practice in order to successfully prepare, cook and serve their selected dishes to guests and judges.

The four competing teams were required to create their own menus and workings for 20 diners. Each team had to produce both a main and a starter or dessert, being scored by three guest local and international chefs.

The clock started at 9.30am, giving the teams three hours of preparation and cooking time. Teams had access to the College garden for fresh produce to enhance their dishes. Outstanding effort went into all dishes presented.

The dishes were judged on three categories; most visually pleasing, best tasting and most healthy.

After much deliberations the results were in!

Most visually pleasing dish
The OLC White Noodles who received Target vouchers.

Best tasting dish
The YARP Black Girls team who received team entry to the Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park.

Most healthy dish
YARP’s Team Fresh who won a selection of plants from NRT’s horticulture department.
