Youth engagement participants graduate

The most recent intake of Youth Engagement Program (YEP) participants at Karratha celebrated their graduation on 1 December.

The group – consisting of 17 and 18 year old teenagers who are disengaged from school – completed a 15 week program to equip them with skills for vocational training and/or employment.

Run by REFAP with the support of NRT, Department of Education, and Apprenticeship Support Australia, participants completed a Certificate I in Leadership, and units from a Certificate I in Construction, backed by literacy and numeracy support.

Throughout the program, participants undertook classroom-based training for the first half of each day, focusing on leadership and work preparation skills. Participants put their skills into practice in the afternoon with hands-on construction experience in the workshop.

The YEP program is set to run again in 2018.
