Centre's success testament to skilled staff

From the moment you walk through the door at Broome Out of School Children’s Activities (BOSCCA), you are instantly swept up by the excitement and laughter of children engaged in a variety of stimulating activities.

The success of the Centre is testament to the team of highly skilled staff employed at the facility to care for children after school and during the holidays.

At the helm of the operation and leading by example is supervisor Belinda Henshaw, who holds an impressive three children’s services qualifications and is working towards her third management course at North Regional TAFE.

Belinda kick-started her career with a Certificate III in Children’s Services in 2009, and continued to build her knowledge with a Certificate IV in Out of School Hours Care before enrolling in a Diploma of Children’s Services (Early Childhood Education and Care), which she completed late last year.

All qualifications were undertaken through NRT Children’s Services lecturer Liz Thomas, which according to Belinda, is the reason she kept returning to TAFE to build her skills.

“I put my name down for casual work at BOSCCA when my children were attending, and I have loved the place ever since. Then I started studying with Liz, and realised just how much there was to learn,” Belinda said.

“I learnt all the different methods of engaging with children that I wasn’t previously aware of.

"You learn things relevant to a childcare environment, which does differ from raising your own children. Liz is really good, and I’ve learnt a lot from her.”

Belinda will continue her studies with North Regional TAFE next year, in a Diploma of Leadership and Management, and hopes to one day transition her skills into primary school teaching.

Employees Amber Bekkers and Thaila Bernard are also strengthening their skills in the workplace by complementing their employment with a Certificate III and Diploma of Children’s Services (Early Childhood Education and Care) through NRT.

Completing the highly skilled team is Kiran Sharma and Randeep Kaur, who both migrated from India and enrolled in Children’s Services qualifications before securing employment at BOSCCA.

Kiran, a qualified Indian school teacher, transitioned into employment after first improving her English through a Certificate I in General Education for Adults, before enrolling in a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.

Similarly, Randeep completed her Certificate III and is now in the final stages of her Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care. Randeep said she credits her success to the assistance from TAFE.

“I want to thank TAFE and especially Liz for getting me where I am today. Without studying, I wouldn’t have this job,” Randeep said.

“I would definitely recommend everyone to study through TAFE.”
