Derby resident rising through the ranks

Derby resident Kerrie Goodchild has risen through the ranks since being awarded North Regional TAFE’s 2017 Shell Scholarship.

Completing a Work Health and Safety Representatives course along with accredited business units, Kerrie has since secured a role as an Education Clerk, where she has also been elected as a workplace health and safety representative.

Previously employed on a casual basis, Kerrie applied for a Shell Scholarship through North Regional TAFE to increase her employment opportunities – a feat she feels she has achieved.

“The scholarship was a great way for me to enhance and update my skills. The scholarship from Shell was very generous and financial assistance was a total bonus as I wasn’t working full time. I knew this course could aid my employment, which it did,” Kerrie said.

“I now hold the health and safety representative position at my current place of employment. I have enhanced my administrative skills and updated my first aid qualifications as a direct result of being awarded this scholarship from Shell.”

Inspired by her success so far, Kerrie plans to continue her studies through a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment at North Regional TAFE.

“The business units assist me in a full understanding of this area… these add to my qualifications and give me confidence in applying for permanent full time positions. I plan on working towards a full Certificate IV in Training and Assessment knowing this qualification will provide an important addition to my future skill set and assist employment advancement opportunities.”

Shell Prelude VP David Bird commended Kerrie on her achievements.

“It’s really pleasing to see a positive example of how the Shell Scholarship program has been supporting residents of the Kimberley to advance their education. Well done to Kerrie for her achievements. We look forward to seeing more students reaching their potential in 2018,” David said.

North Regional TAFE’s Business and Community Development Manager Rebecca Snowdon reiterated the importance of supporting students like Kerrie through local scholarship opportunities.

“Scholarships provide opportunity for students to earn an education by alleviating some of the financial burden attached to studying. Through this assistance, students, whatever their age, can dedicate more of their time to their studies, allowing them to realise their full learning potential,” Rebecca said.

“With this in mind Shell, together with North Regional TAFE, will be offering scholarships across a range of study areas in 2018.”
