Joshua breaks barriers to success

A dedicated North Regional TAFE student is proving is it possible to accomplish all of the obstacles that stand in the way of success.

When Broome’s Joshua Sheard joined the Open Learning Centre early this year, he struggled with his general English, including word pronunciation, writing and spelling.

Undertaking a Certificate I in General Education for Adults, it wasn’t long before Joshua had built up his confidence and was producing newspaper articles, and making presentations to the class.

Joshua attended class every day and completed the qualification in just six months – half of the expected completion time.

It was the completion of the refurbished NRT practicing hair and beauty salon that sparked his interest in pursuing further study, with a new career path in mind.

Joshua was writing an article for the class newsletter on the salon refurbishments when he decided to enrol in a Certificate II in Retail Services, with a focus on hair and beauty.

He is currently undertaking studies in the salon with the hope of obtaining employment in the customer service industry.

“The OLC helped me with my spelling and speaking; now I really enjoy interacting with people and am working on building my customer service skills,” Joshua said

“Once I finish studying, I would like to get a job in customer service.”
