What's new?

In January 2020, the Lower fees, local skills program started with 18 half price course fees qualifications at North Regional TAFE. On 2 July 2020, a further 24 half price course fees qualifications were announced at NR TAFE in a broad range of industry areas. If you think you've seen the Lower fees, local skills courses already, take another look!

What's better than half price course fees? How about an annual fees cap!

That's right — regardless of how much the course fees for your qualification actually are, you will not pay more than the set fees cap amount per qualification or course.

24 new qualifications were added to Lower fees Local skills on 2 July 2020. Fee caps for these courses apply from that date.

  • All students aged 15—24 years of age are eligible for an annual concession course fee cap of $400 
  • For all eligible concession students, the annual course fee cap is $400
  • The annual course fee cap for non-concession students is $1,200

The Diploma of Community Services provides participants with the skills to develop, implement and evaluate programs, secure and manage funding, case-manage clients in a community services setting, and lead a community services team. This course can be completed in three sections - program development, case management, and team leadership - and is an affordable entry pathway into tertiary study in an approved Social Work degree.

As part of this qualification, participants will undertake a supervised 100 hours of work placement in order to apply the skills and knowledge learnt. A federal police clearance and Working with Children Check are required prior to placement.

Graduates are able to work in aged care homes, youth shelters, State Government Family and Community Service Agencies, youth centres, aboriginal communities, community centres and local councils.

The Diploma of Nursing provides participants with the practical skills and knowledge to work as an enrolled nurse. Upon successful completion, participants will have the skills to assist in the provision of preventative, curative and rehabilitative nursing, and will be able to seek enrolled nursing registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

The North West cattle industry provides a vast area of employment for young stockmen and women from all over WA.

The Certificate II in Rural Operations is an entry-level course suitable for students who wish to try their hand in the cattle industry. Students will undertake a combination of written assignments and hands-on industry tasks including fencing, tractor operations, cattle processing and mustering in teams.

Students will gain skills in machine operation and maintenance and horse husbandry. This qualification can lead participants on an exciting path from stockman, to head stockman and eventually, station manager.

Connecting with Country program - Broome

The Connecting with Country program is a unique opportunity for students to develop knowledge and skills in horticulture and land management relevant to the local region, while undertaking a Certificate II in Rural Operations. The program runs for three days per week and provides practical skills and experience in:

  • Propagating seedlings, striking cuttings, potting up and caring for nursery plants
  • Preparing and establishing an organic vegetable patch
  • Installing and maintaining irrigation
  • Operating machinery and equipment
  • Recognising plants
  • Growing bush foods
  • Maintaining and enhancing natural areas
  • Promoting the local natural environment
