Skill sets are made up of one or more units of competency, link directly to an industry need or regulatory requirement, and result in a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment. Some skill sets also count towards a higher qualification, should you wish to undertake further study at a later date.

Short courses provide hands-on training in a new skill you can use in your personal or professional life, and are a great way to refresh your knowledge or give you a taste of a different industry. Short courses are non-accredited and result in a Certificate of Participation.

In any one year, approximately 1 in 5 Australians aged 16-85 have a common mental illness. Evidence suggests that Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people experience this at a higher rate. Mental Health First Aid training will teach you practical skills to assist adults who are developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis.

Our Basic Welding short course will give you an introduction to welding, including safety and workshop procedures.
In this introduction to welding course you will have access to gas metal and arc welding (GMAW), manual metal arc welding (MMAW) and gas tungsten arc welding (TIG) in a fully equipped workshop.
The course will provide students with practical skills that will allow you to complete basic welding tasks. Students are welcome to bring their own projects to class and discuss them with your lecturer.
Please note that students will be required to wear personal protective clothing at all times (safety boots, safety glasses, long pants and a cotton drill shirt).
This course is not formally assessed. A Certificate of Participation will be provided upon completion. This course is designed for students who have limited welding experience, or who have never welded before.

- To complete this course, it is not a prerequisite that you must be currently employed in Industry. This COVID-19 Skill Set stands alone and can be completed separately if desired. However, students may be enrolled in either the CHC43015 Certificate IV in Ageing Support or the CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support and have a current work placement. Alternatively, students who are not enrolled in either qualification may be employed in an aged care or home and community care facility.
- There is practical assessment component to be completed in your workplace or placement, but this can be simulated if needed at NR TAFE – please talk with your local lecturer.
- This skill set is self-paced, online and completely flexible and all theory components are available online/can be completed in your own time outside of work hours.

Students studying in Broome:

The Elements of Shipboard Safety Skill Set forms a crucial part of all maritime qualifications offered from Coxswain Grade II, Coxswain, Master 24 and MED II. This three-day course covers all of the important emergency procedures required to survive at sea if disaster strikes. The course is intensive, rigorous and physically demanding.

- Swim short distances while fully clothed and wearing shoes without the aid of a life jacket
