Employment opportunities in residential aged care facilities are among the fastest growing of any industry and with an ageing population, these are likely to increase in the coming years. This entry-level qualification provides you with an introduction to a career as an aged care worker. It has been designed to equip you with industry-specific skills to enable a smooth transition into a Certificate III in Individual Support or a traineeship within the aged care sector. 

Learn how to empower people within the aged care sector through the implementation of a rights-based service and a person-centred approach. Throughout this course, you will learn about effective communication, how to organise, provide and monitor support services, follow safe work practices and work respectfully with people from diverse social and cultural groups. You will also learn how to recognise and respond to life-threatening emergencies in line with the Australian Recuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines. 

You will complete a mandatory work placement during this course where you will put your skills into practice in the use of suitable facilities, equipment and resources, following individualised plans, adhering to infection control policies and procedures, responding to hazards, problem-solving and modelling industry operating conditions. 

This course includes units that can be credited towards the Certificate III in Individual Support

This course is part of the Skills Ready initiative, allowing you to pay just half of the standard course fees for training from now until 2025! In addition, eligible students will have their course fees capped at just $400 per year. Please note that additional resource, material and/or equipment costs may apply.   • Basic language, literacy and numeracy skills and knowledge 
  • You must hold a current National Police Check for mandatory work placement 
  • A sufficient level of health and fitness to undertake manual handling tasks 

You must complete 100 hours of work placement within the aged care sector as part of this course. If you are not currently employed in the sector, your lecturer will assist you in finding a suitable placement for this period. During your work placement, you will observe, develop and put your theoretical skills into practice while shadowing a workplace supervisor.

This qualification prepares you for roles such as: 

  • Aged care worker 
  • Home care worker 
  • Disability support worker   
  • Community support worker 

It also acts as a bridging course into higher level training.
