The Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Master Up To 35 Metres Near Coastal) entitles certificate holders to:

  • Master on commercial vessels up to 35 metres long within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ)
  • Mate on vessels up to 80 metres long in inshore waters

This qualification is delivered in skill sets, enabling flexibility for students and the ability to articulate across qualifications.

To attain this qualification, participants will need to complete the following skill sets:

  • Operations and Management of a Vessel
  • Vessel Maintenance and Technical Knowledge
  • Stability and Sea Worthiness
  • Navigation, Passage, Preparations
  • Industry Guidelines and Requirements
  • Confined Space
  • Elements of Shipboard Safety

Participants will require the following text:

  • Australian Boating Manual
Coxswain AMPA

Upon completion of a maritime qualification, participants must complete an AMSA mandated practical assessment - Coxswain AMPA. The National Standard for Commercial Vessels Part D - Crew Competencies requires that a seafarer pass a final assessment prior to the issue of a certificate of competency. Half price in 2021

This course is part of the Lower fees, local skills initiative. From 1 January 2021, you will pay just half of the standard course fees for training in 2021.

The following people will be eligible for the $400 annual course fees cap under Lower fees, local skills

  • Persons aged 15—24 years at the time of enrolment (excluding students enrolled at school)
  • Persons and dependents of persons receiving JobKeeper payment
  • Persons and dependents of persons in receipt of services from one of the following Commonwealth support or employment services programs:
    • Jobactive
    • Online Employment Services
    • ParentsNext
  • Persons and dependents of persons receiving the Youth Allowance, AUSTUDY or ABSTUDY
  • Persons and dependents of persons holding:
    • a pensioner concession card or  Health Care Card; or
    • Repatriation Health Benefits Card issued by the Department of Veterans' Affairs
  • Dependents of persons who are inmates of a custodial institution
