North Regional TAFE’s Aquaculture, Maritime and Logistics area encompasses qualifications in aquaculture, fishing operations, logistics and warehousing, and maritime studies.

Our tropical aquaculture facility in Broome offers state of the art training to aspiring aquaculturists and those with a keen interest in the marine ecosystem, with qualifications focusing on the cultivation and production of marine finfish, crustaceans, molluscs, aquatic plants, and other commercially important and fascinating species.

Our Broome campus is also home to one of the most advanced maritime training, research and development facilities in the country, which provides simulated maritime training, and services for new and existing port development research and design projects. We offer a suite of maritime qualifications to progress through, in addition to a range of skill sets.

Logistics and Warehousing are essential to the developing resources sector in North Western Australia and our qualifications will provide you with the skills to excel in this industry.

The Certificate I in Aquaculture represents the minimum requirements for an individual commencing a career as an aquaculturist. This course provides participants with an introduction into the aquaculture environment and some basic skills needed in this area of the seafood industry. It is an appropriate level for an individual undertaking work experience, or in a probationary period in employment.

This qualification is suitable for people working:

  • On aquaculture farms or fishout/put-and-take operations
  • In hatcheries and nurseries
  • In live post-harvest holding facilities, such as processing plants, wholesalers or transporters
  • In pet shops, public aquaria, zoos or other facilities with aquatic animals
  • For companies providing contract specialist services for aquaculture operations

The Certificate III in Aquaculture is suitable for participants who have an interest in the aquatic environment, and may be on a pathway to developing their own aquaculture business.

The course covers:

  • Aquaculture and animal handling
  • Team work and team management, including supervision
  • Biology and ecology
  • Basic construction
  • Disease and pest management
  • Hatchery operations
  • Water quality
  • Seafood handling

Throughout this course, students will work with a number of aquatic species while monitoring water chemistry, maintaining holding systems, providing feed and other associated activities. Students will further develop their construction skills for maintaining and repairing live holding systems and will produce and maintain live food for aquaculture. Participants will develop essential skills required to operate in an aquaculture hatchery while working in teams and supervising others undertaking tasks.

Upon successful completion, students will have the skills to work as an aquaculture technician, in live post-harvest holding facilities, in pet shops or other facilities with aquatic animals.

Learn the basics of marine engineering.

This Coxswain Engineering Skill Set is a mandatory requirement in the Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 near Coastal) qualification. This skill set is an intensive three-day course introducing basic marine engineering.

During this course, participants will learn how to:

  • Operate and service small vessel propulsion systems including diesel and petrol engines, cooling systems and lubrication systems
  • Undertake pre-start checks, routine checks, fault finding, shutdown procedures
  • Operate and service auxiliary systems including steering systems, emergency steering, rudders, bilges systems, manifold systems and valves
  • Operate deck machinery, anchor windlass, winches
  • Maintain and service marine extra low and low voltage electrical systems
  • Carry out refuelling and fuel transfer operations.

This course will provide participants with the ability to maintain machinery, troubleshoot and identify potential problems, as well as service machinery according to manufacturers' schedules.

The Coxswain Navigation Skill Set is an intensive and hands-on three-day course that forms part of the mandatory requirement of the Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 near Coastal) qualification.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Develop and undertake a passage plan for your vessel in recognition of weather and tides
  • Interpret navigational charts and navigational hazards
  • Safely and accurately plot your position using a range of different navigation equipment
  • Apply navigation to coastal voyages

This course provides great skills for recreational and commercial vessel operators alike and is a must for anyone wanting to undertake a boating trip.

This Skill Set is a fundamental component of both the Certificate I in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 2 near Coastal) and Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1) qualifications.

This course covers all of the necessary points to safely operate and manoeuvre a vessel to 12m in length following domestic regulations.

This course is rigorous and students will learn to: 

  • Apply regulations, laws and codes of conduct required to operate a commercial vessel
  • Handle and manoeuvre a vessel in varying conditions and emergencies
  • Tow and be towed safely
  • Secure a vessel and apply ropes and knots to different situations
  • Understand and maintain different propulsion systems and their application
  • Check the condition and seaworthiness of a vessel and identify engine faults
  • Refuel 

The final day of the course will consist of the Coxswain Environmental Practice Skill Set as applicable to the Coxswain Grade 2, Coxswain Grade 1 and MED II qualifications.

The Elements of Shipboard Safety Skill Set forms a crucial part of all maritime qualifications offered from Coxswain Grade II, Coxswain, Master 24 and MED II. This three-day course covers all of the important emergency procedures required to survive at sea if disaster strikes. The course is intensive, rigorous and physically demanding.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Swim short distances while fully clothed and wearing shoes without the aid of a life jacket
  • Launch a life raft, right an inverted life-raft, climb into the life raft and assist other survivors
  • Successfully use flares, EPRIBS and other emergency equipment
  • Follow evacuation procedures to abandon ship and use survival techniques such as HELP (Heat Escape Lessening Position)
  • Use correct fire extinguisher to extinguish a fire type such as oil fire, electrical fire or plastic fire
  • Understand and practice OS&H workplace procedures

Gain an understanding of how the key components of a logistical operation are carried out through interactive learning. You will learn skills in the areas of safe work operations, workplace sustainability, supply chain functions and manual handling techniques.

Enterprise Safety is the second of four blocks of training to upskill and develop your knowledge in the field of Logistics. Upon successful completion of all four blocks of training, you will receive a Certificate II in Logistics TLI21810.

This two day skill set provides participants with the skills required to use a marine radio correctly. This course is a mandatory requirement of the Coxswains and Master 24 Licenses issued by AMSA and DOT, and also results in the official Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency (MROCP) License issued by ACMA.

The Master 24 Navigation Watch Keeping Skill Set is an intensive five-day course and is mandatory for the Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 Metres near Coastal) qualification.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Maintain a bridge watch whilst anchored and at sea
  • Respond to emergency situations
  • Manage crew on watch
  • Plan, navigate and execute a passage in a range of weather and tides
  • Set up and use a wide range of wheelhouse equipment including radar, ECS, ECDIS, AIS, DGPS and GPS, sounders, and more
  • Maintain navigational records

Participants will work on a detailed scenario for a simulated vessel ‘Master Class’ and run the vessel through a scenario on our worldclass full mission, full bridge maritime simulator. This simulation is state of the art and we are confident that you will not find any better training for this skill set anywhere in Australia.

The Master 24 Seamanship Skill Set is an intensive five day course and is a mandatory skill set for the Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 metres Near Coastal) qualification.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Ensure that the vessel maintains survey
  • Apply regulations to vessel maintenance and maintain necessary records
  • Successfully work with crew to achieve goals
  • Ensure environmental standards are being met
  • Manoeuvre a vessel up to 24 metres in a range of different conditions and in emergencies
  • Apply seamanship skills including using and maintaining ropes and wires, operating lifting gear, securing a vessel, checking the seaworthiness and stability of a vessel, securing stores and loads, and overseeing refuelling operations.

The Master 24 Ship Knowledge Skill Set is a five-day course that is a prerequisite for the Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 Metres near Coastal) qualification. This skill set focuses on the necessary skills required to sufficiently maintain a vessel up to 24 metres in length.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Plan and undertake basic deck maintenance
  • Clean and prepare the vessel for maintenance
  • Carry out maintenance of deck fittings, equipment and systems, underwater components and identify faulty components
  • Supervise crew undertaking maintenance
  • Safely slip a vessel
  • Undertake pre-deployment checks and duties

This course has been designed to provide participants with the fundamental standards of logistics and warehousing operations, in compliance with heavy vehicle transport legislation.


This is the second of five intensive face to face sessions that contribute to the nationally recognised qualification TLI21616 Certificate II in Warehousing Operations.

This course covers:

  • Workplace procedures for picking, packing and processing orders
  • Documentation and workplace records
  • Inspection of goods upon arrival
  • Unloading and storing stock
  • The chain of responsibility requirements in the heavy vehicle national law regulations
  • Load restraint

The Social Diversity and Communication skill set provides participants with the skills required to work in a socially diverse industry, providing high standards of service and communications to consumers.

This skill set is the fourth of five short and intensive face to face sessions that contribute to nationally recognised qualification TLI21616 Certificate II in Warehousing Operations.

On completion, participants will be able to:

  • Create relationships with customers, identify their needs and deliver the service or product
  • Communicate with customers clearly and concisely using a range of tools and equipment
  • Apply cultural awareness and problem solving techniques when working in a socially diverse environment
  • Work in accordance with relevant anti-discrimination and equal employment opportunity regulations

The Logistics and Warehousing industry is essential to the developing resources sector in North Western Australia.

The Certificate II in Warehousing Operations provides participants with the practical skills and knowledge to receive and despatch goods, and pick and pack orders.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Participate in stock-takes
  • Handle dangerous goods
  • Operate a hand-pallet forklift
  • Undertake relevant computing activities
  • Provide good customer service
  • Undertake quality control procedures

Upon successful completion, participants will have the knowledge and skills required to work in the warehousing industry, as well as a nationally recognised qualification. Recognition of Prior Learning is available for suitable candidates.
