Building and Construction

Building and construction remains a growing field of employment, providing a range of attractive employment opportunities to those looking to build their career in the industry.

North Regional TAFE covers a wide variety of areas within the industry, including carpentry and joinery, civil construction, electrotechnology and general construction, giving participants the opportunity to embark on a trade path as a carpenter, electrician, or civil construction plant operator, among many other career options. We offer beginner qualifications that act as a stepping stone into the industry, through to apprenticeship training and other specialised courses to help you land your perfect job. We also offer a range of skill sets and short courses in machine operation through to hobby courses.

Lay the foundations for a career in the construction industry.

The Certificate II in Building and Construction (Pathway - Trades) is a pre-vocational course for learners seeking a career in a construction trade. The first stage of the course is common to 11 construction trades and provides an introduction into the industry, its culture, occupations, job roles and workplace expectations.

The units of competency cover essential occupational health and safety requirements, the industrial and work organisation structure, communication skills, work planning, and basic use of tools and materials. Learners are able to consider the 11 trades during the initial stage and while attending work experience. The latter stage of the course provides the learner with a choice to complete specific competencies from a particular trade stream that lead directly into a trade qualification, with full articulation and credit transfer, when seeking an apprenticeship.

Please note: This course is only available to students still attending school, under the VET delivered to secondary students program.

IAA07 IAA07 Forklift Skill Set

Learn how to operate a forklift safely and efficiently.

Participants will be guided through the operation of a forklift, ensuring:

  • Risk control measures are implemented
  • Traffic management is carried out in accordance with workplace procedures
  • Pre-start and operational checks are completed
  • Loads are monitored correctly
  • Shutdown procedures are carried out

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a forklift Notice of Assessment and a Work Safe High Risk Work Licence.

Please note:

  • Participants must be aged 18 years or over, and provide two primary forms of identification, along with two passport photos.
  • Participants are required to wear a high visibility shirt and steel cap boots during the course.
  • Pre-reading may be required before commencement of this course

 

 

* If participants are working in the civil construction industry or have previous experience documented in a logbook prior to undertaking this training, a fast track process may be available. Please talk to your local lecturer.

Course fees include provision for your licence application fee to Worksafe to obtain the relevant High Risk Work Licence (HRWL).  Following a State Government announcement on 31 March 2020 of proposed COVID-19 economic relief measures, it is anticipated that legislation will be enacted to provide for discounts or waiver of HRWL licence fees for a set period.  These discounts and waivers are not yet available, but are expected to be backdated where applicable.  Any students or employers who are eligible for refunds will be contacted direct by Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety in due course.

The testing and tagging of electrical equipment must be performed by trained individuals. 

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to test and tag electrical equipment as per Australian Standards 3760 and 3012.  Participants will be trained to confidently perform testing and tagging, while meeting compliance and ensuring the safety of staff on the worksite. 

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including long trousers, a long sleeved shirt and covered footwear must be worn throughout the duration of the course.
