Intravenous (IV) Administration Skill Set

Are you an enrolled nurse looking to upskill in administering and monitoring intravenous (IV) therapy?

 

Master the skills required to administer and monitor medications and intravenous (IV) therapy, including how to:

  • calculate dosage requirements
  • interpret written instructions from an authorised prescriber
  • assess a patient for medication effectiveness and side effects
  • Respond to an allergic pharmacological reaction

 

This course is suitable for Enrolled Nurses who have a current registration with NMBA and who are currently working in an acute clinical environment. Participants will use their existing skills, knowledge and experience in relation to administration and monitoring of medicines to achieve Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

 

 

  • Students are required to attend a weekly 2-hour online live tutorial specifically focusing on nursing calculations and each module has a 3-hour online live tutorial to teach the medication specific subject matter.
  • At least 20 hours per week of self-paced study, which includes accessing the learning resources online on Blackboard and completed written theory assessments.
  • One week (Mon-Fri) of simulation training held at the Pundulmurra Campus Simulation Ward.  Upon enrollment, dates and times will be confirmed. This is a compulsory component of the training and all students must attend this training.
  • On the job practical skills assessments. These practical skills apply to the Intravenous administration components of the skill set. The RN will collect this evidence in the form of third party reports and inform the lecturer. The student has six weeks to gather this information using their Work Placement Record (WPR) book and forward it to their lecturer for assessment and resulting.
