NR TAFE makes finals together with Karratha apprentice

North Regional TAFE has been selected as a Large Training Provider of the Year finalist in the 2019 WA Training Awards.

NR TAFE joins fellow colleges Central Regional TAFE and South Metropolitan TAFE in vying for the top spot, which will be announced on 13 September at the Crown Perth.

NR TAFE took out the top award in 2017, and hopes to once again win over the judges following their site visit to the College’s Karratha campus late last month.

To add to the excitement Karratha student Jesse Maiorana will join College representatives at the awards night, after being selected as one of four State finalists for WA Apprentice of the Year.

Jesse completed a Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade apprenticeship with Programmed through host employer Woodside in February this year.

The father-of-three previously worked as a construction trades assistant and said the career change was one of the best decisions he has made.

“It’s been exciting and different, and I’ve been able to work with some great role models,” Jesse said.

“Once you have a skill like a trade, your value in the workplace really goes up. Having a young family, it is the stable option… it is a skill you can fall back on for the rest of your life.”

Winners of the individual State awards have the opportunity to compete in the Australia Training Awards, held in Brisbane on 18 – 22 November.
