Half price TAFE fees set to make training more affordable

Fees will be halved for 18 courses at North Regional TAFE next year as part of a State Government initiative to make local training opportunities more affordable.

From 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2021, the course fee rate per hour for these qualifications will be reduced by 50 per cent. The maximum annual fee students will pay is capped at $400 for concession students and youth, and at $1,200 for non-concession students

The fee reduction is part of the State Government’s two-year Lower fees, local skills initiative, aimed at stimulating training in job growth areas and support new apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities in Western Australia.

“Students in the Pilbara and the Kimberley will now have access to more affordable training across a range of qualifications. Not only are fees for non-concession students capped at $1200, students eligible for a concession rate and youth aged between 15 and 24, will have the opportunity to undertake a full year’s study capped at just $400. This means that all our students enrolling in courses under the new initiative will receive a reduction in course fees,” NR TAFE Managing Director, Kevin Doig said.

The initiative is aligned with priority industry sectors in Western Australia such as aged care and disability care.

“We will increase the delivery capability of North Regional TAFE at both Broome and Karratha campuses in the areas of disability support and aged care. In Broome, there will be a brand new facility built and in Karratha, an existing facility that is currently underutilised will be repurposed. We expect to have both of these developments up and running ready for second semester next year,“ Kevin said.
