What is distance learning?

NR TAFE is adapting the learning experience to ensure the safety of our students, staff and College community, and to make sure you get the most out of your course amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Distance learning is where students’ study can be undertaken without having to be at TAFE for the whole unit or course. Distance learning can be a combination of different learning materials and activities that enable students to undertake their training from their home or workplace.

Distance learning can be offered in a number of ways, and each course may be different in the way that distance learning is used and supported. For example, distance learning can be delivered through:

  • Online resources
  • Electronic workbooks
  • Printed textbooks
  • Other means depending on the program.

Furthermore, distance learning can be supported and facilitated through:

  • Phone
  • Email
  • Webinars, videos and online study groups
  • Workplace learning
  • Small face-to-face workshops and assessment where social distancing and hygiene protocols apply.

Importantly, there are some programs that can be supported entirely through distance learning, but there are many that require a blend of distance learning and workshops to ensure that students can develop and demonstrate the skills for the unit or qualification.

Distance learning may involve students undertaking the majority of their theory learning initially, and once that has been completed, the practical skills developed in workshop activities.
