Come and explore this new painting technique using beeswax!

Encaustic is a Greek word meaning to ‘heat in’ or to ‘burn in’ (enkaustikos). During this course, participants will learn how to use heat to melt beeswax, and embed and work to the layers through the wabi-sabi approach. 

Participants will also be given the opportunity to incorporate mixed media and varying techniques to bring their artwork to life.

This four-week course provides participants with the basic knowledge and essential skills to write engaging, and publishable, content including images. Participants will better understand their reading audience and the challenges involved in producing high quality content.

About the lecturer...

Carmelo Amalfi is a multi award-winning journalist and publisher based in Fremantle, Western Australia.

A prolific writer and media adviser commissioned by Australian and overseas media, government and industry, Amalfi has worked in mainstream news for the past 30 years. From 2006 to 2012, he taught print and online writing, law and ethics and photography at Curtin and Murdoch universities.

In 2015, Amalfi embarked on a freelance career that culminated in the launch of StreetWise magazine and its online page at www.streetwisemedia.com.au. Amalfi has written, edited and produced content for local, State and international media groups including The Australian, ABC, The West Australian, Sunday Times, The Age, Sydney Morning Herald, Cosmos Magazine and The Evening Standard in the UK.

Content produced for print and online media includes articles about science and environment, maritime and military history, higher education and defence affairs.

Do you have an eye for photography?

Learn how to use a camera to capture a moment and tell stories through your images.

This four-week course provides participants with the basic knowledge and essential skills required to take high quality, publishable photographs using a variety of techniques and photographic equipment. You will also learn how to
prepare and package images for print and online publication. Students have the opportunity to take part in an offsite photography field trip during the Saturday class.

Please note: A reliable camera and mobile phone camera is required. Extra camera and laptop will be available.

Drawing is the back bone to your arts practice.


This class allows you to build your fundamental drawing skills and learn how to capture what is seen with an artist’s eye within the Studio environment. In this course you will learn and explore basic drawing techniques with pencil, ink, charcoal and pastel and investigate the elements and principles of design in this relaxed evening drawing class. No prior drawing experience is required, so come and delve into the world of mark making.

IAD45 Paper and Cane Sculpture Skill Set Skill set Face-to-face classroom delivery

Let your creativity run wild!

In this course you will have the opportunity to explore and investigate a choice of materials and methods to approach 3D fibre sculpture construction.

Learn how to:

  • Construct your very own Grass Animals in the style of the wonderful Tjampi Desert Weavers

OR

  • Construct sculptural forms using Paper and Cane …. Think the amazing Shorebird Quest in miniature!

This is a great class to explore 3D sculpture using easy accessible materials.

Please note:

Students may spend 4 weeks exploring grass construction methods followed by 4 week exploring paper and cane construction methods and processes, or alternatively may spend the entire 8 weeks exploring just one of the construction methods.

IAD43 Papermaking Intermediate Skill Set Skill set Face-to-face classroom delivery

Get creative with Papermaking guided by lecturer, Jody Loaring.

Explore the process of making your own water leaf papers using recycled papers and plant fibre.

This course is part one of a two week workshop, with the Papermaking Intermediate Skill Set covered in week one and Printmaking Intermediate Skill Set in week two.

Explore simple printmaking processes to print and work back into your beautiful hand paper papers.

Learn fundamental design and textile printmaking skills and express some of your favorite motifs on paper and fabric.

Throughout this course you will learn how to produce your own line of works with some ready-made materials. This course is suitable for all levels.
