In the heart of Broome, Western Australia, we are thrilled to share the inspiring experience of Della Salvia, one of our esteemed international students currently studying SIT40416 Certificate III in Commercial Cookery.

Join us as we delve into her story, exploring her international student experience and the recipe for success she's crafting in the vibrant kitchens of the Kimberley region.

"As an International student, I chose North Regional TAFE because this Campus has a great course that can build my skills and offer such a helpful scholarship for international students.

Studying at North Regional TAFE helped my social life. It's increased my confidence and public speaking skills, especially when I use English as my daily language in Australia. I used to be shy and not confident in front of new people; however, once I stepped foot on this campus, I met so many people. I get more and more used to it every day, and now I am making lots of friends! Besides that, I gained new skills in cooking from my practical class. I am studying Commercial Cookery, but did not know much about cooking, yet studying for three months has taught me basic cooking skills that help me every day!

My memorable moment while studying here was when I volunteered. There is a big festival in Broome called Shinju Matsuri. One of the events in this festival is a long table dinner. TAFE collaborated with the restaurant, a master chef, and a celebrity chef to hold the long-table dinner. The organisers prepared the food in TAFE's kitchen with the help of commercial cookery students. It was one of the most wonderful experiences that I have ever had. I learned so many things from it. I now know what working in a big event and a real kitchen feels like. I made a lot of new friends as well!

The support services assist me very well. There was a day when I needed to make my resume, so I went to the Jobs & Skills Centre to ask for help. The staff were very welcoming and helpful to international students. They guided and assisted me in making a resume.

My advice is to keep going and take a break if you are tired, but don't give up. I know it's hard for you to adjust to a new country and you may find some difficulties. However, trust me. It's going to be okay; see how far you have come, and how proud you will be in the future when all your dreams come true."
