NR TAFE is committed to providing access to education and training across the North West.

A range of scholarships are available to assist current and prospective students with the cost of fees and study related expenses.

NR TAFE's Scholarship Program provides opportunities for Kimberley and Pilbara residents to progress their career aspirations in a range of eligible industry areas.

Each Scholarship and Award has been designed to create opportunities for a better future through education and training, and are awarded to prospective students who can demonstrate educational disadvantage and financial hardship.

Women in Non-Traditional Trades (WiNTT) Scholarship

Break stereotypes and break into your dream career!

The Women in Non-Traditional Trades (WINTT) TAFE scholarship program is designed to help encourage more women into roles that are traditionally male-dominated across building and construction, science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). 

About the Scholarship: 

The WiNTT Scholarship applies to any person who identifies as a woman enrolled in the selected Apprenticeships, Traineeships, or institutional Qualifications below. 

  • Commencing from 1 January 2024
  • Each successful applicant could receive a $5,000 scholarship payment
  • Up to 20 places available who enrol* in selected qualifications at NRTAFE 
  • The payment will cover training costs or other associated expenses to support the participants through their studies.

Rio Tinto Early Childhood Education and Care Scholarship

Applications for 2023 are now open 

Rio Tinto in collaboration with NR TAFE are offering scholarships to students undertaking the following qualifications at NR TAFE:

  • CHC30121 Certificate III of Early Childhood Education and Care - 10 or more scholarship places offered per year
  • CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care - 10 or more scholarship places offered per year 

Please note: the Certificate III qualification is a pre-requisite for entry into the Diploma.

Scholarships will be available for at least 20 students per year, totalling at least 80 students over four years.
The Scholarship covers all NR TAFE resource fees for the specified qualifications, including completion of the First Aid training unit of competency required for completion. This funding also supports visa holding students who want to complete the courses, as their course fees will be not covered under the ‘Free in ‘23’ government program. This funding will cover 25% of their fees on commencement and a further 25% on completion of the course.

Am I eligible?

  • Students applying for the Scholarship will need to provide proof of residential address in the City of Karratha or Shire of Ashburton
  • Students must be undertaking  CHC30121 Certificate III of Early Childhood Education and Care or CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care
  • Students need to be willing to meet the COVID -19 vaccination requirements for the childcare industry in order to undertake the practical component of CHC30121 Certificate III of Early Childhood Education and Care and CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care
  • Students must be eligible for government subsidised training through being an Australian citizen, Permanent Resident or Temporary Visa holder eligible for government funded training (please refer to the Visa Subclass Guide(opens in a new tab) .
  • Students who are not eligible for government funded training and who are awarded a Scholarship, will be funded for 50% of their total course fees.  This will be paid as 25% upfront upon commencement, and the further 25% paid when the student successfully completes the qualification

How do I apply?


The applicant:

  • Confirms they intend to gain employment or remain employed at an Early Childhood Education and Care provider within the City of Karratha or Shire of Ashburton 
  • Confirms they meet the eligibility criteria for the “Early Childhood” Scholarship program.
  • Agrees to abide by the decisions of the Selection Committee and understands that no appeals will be entered into.
  • Is aware that unless there are exceptional circumstances, a recipient with unsatisfactory progress or who withdraws from their course will have their scholarship cancelled. 
  • Gives permission for their photographs, profiles and training details to be used for promotional purposes by NR TAFE and Rio Tinto.

Mary MacKillop Today First Nations Vocational Scholarship

Since 2021, NR TAFE and Mary MacKillop Today have partnered together to provide the Mary MacKillop First Nations Vocational Scholarship. This scholarship aims to create opportunity across economic, social, political and physical wellbeing for students affected by financial hardship, vulnerability and barriers to education.

Value of Scholarship: $1,000 - $5,000

Am I eligible?

  • Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander


  • Can demonstrate educational disadvantage or financial hardship
  • Hold a pension or concession card
  • Single parent seeking to return to the workforce
  • Enrolling in first vocational qualification
  • Not receiving another scholarship

All courses will be considered, however preference will be given to applicants wishing to study: aquaculture and maritime, art and music, beauty and hairdressing, conservation and land management, commercial cookery, and hospitality and tourism
