Get career curious! 

North Regional TAFE is excited to be offering opportunities for Year 9 students across the Kimberley and Pilbara region to become career curious.  

The exciting and innovative program has been designed to challenge students' thinking and make connections between education, post-school opportunities and career pathways. 

The CTP will provide opportunities for Year 9 students to explore career and study pathways, and help them to make more informed decisions about their subject selections in Years 10, 11 and 12. The program will encourage students to extend their thinking through practical activities and meaningful experiences with the world of work.

Build it, break it, fix it!

Were you a Lego expert as a kid? The construction industry is one which requires a steady hand and a keen eye to assemble dream homes and kitchen cupboards. Learn what is takes to build a career in the construction industry whilst gaining a taste of building using tools. Get to walk through the carpentry workshop, learn what the tools of the trade are, and potentially meet a few apprentices already on their way to a fully qualified trade.  

Get your motor running!

Lift the bonnet on all thing's mechanics with an interactive career taster in the automotive training workshop at North Regional TAFE.  

The automotive industry involves more than just being a mechanic - there are many fun and exciting career possibilities. Find out in this taster what it takes to build engines or assemble cars. You might prefer automotive painting or car audio systems? The automotive industry is versatile and offers many opportunities.  

Students will get the opportunity to strip down small engines using hand tools, identify automobile parts and reassemble the jigsaw. 

 

Express your style.

We’ve all seen them. Those lifestyle gurus with incredible hair and gorgeous-yet-comfortable wardrobes. The beauty-makers, and confidence boosters. They live a life of art and transformation. The Beauty Therapists: Make-up Artists, Massage Therapists, Facialists, Beauty Specialists, Beauty Editors, and beauty-bloggers.  

Have you ever wanted to try it? To step into the creative field of beauty therapy, and devote yourself to the beautification of others? I mean, it has a nice ring to it. This taster introduces students to the pathway and industry in Beauty therapy. Students will learn the tricks of the trade, complete mini manicures, and nail art, whilst learning what it takes to make it in the industry. 

Windswept and hairdressing 

If you have creative flair and a passion for hair, this could be the career for you. Being a hairdresser provides a genuine opportunity to touch the lives of people in more ways than one. As a hairdresser, you influence your client's social life and shape part of their personality. A great haircut and style can build a person’s confidence and be truly lifechanging.  

This taster gets you into the beauty salon, learning about tools and techniques and whilst experimenting with basic styling. Beach waves anyone?  

Fit and fabulous

Have you always dreamed of helping others reach their fitness goals? Or would you like to help top athletes reach their peak performance. You will get a little sweaty during this taster, while gaining a glimpse into the fitness and sport and recreation industry, learning about all the various aspects of training athletes and what sorts of career pathways from personal training to allied health might be your future career.  

 

Build it and they will come! 

The Civil construction industry is one of the biggest and fastest growing job areas in WA. Find out about the maintenance, design, and construction of both natural and physically built environments such as roads, railways, buildings, water reservoirs, subdivisions, airports, bridges, sewer systems, tunnels, and dams. This taster will open your eyes to various aspects of the industry whilst operating some really cool machinery!  

 

The workforce of tomorrow!

Are you a lover of tech and robots? A career in design and automation engineering will see you work at the forefront of rapidly evolving technologies with opportunities in many industries. Automation is about creating and applying technologies that control or monitor production and delivery. It is not about pressing buttons, but rather, designing and developing the buttons. It is about designing, programming, configuring, and testing Human-Machine Interface(opens in a new tab)  (HMI) and industrial networks. It is about working with the “robots” – from concept to prototype.  

Getting down to business 

Have you always dreamed of running your own business and wondered what it takes to build your own business plan? This taster takes you into the world of digital marketing and gets you designing and thinking about how you might build a social media plan that supports your business. 

Strong as Steel 

If working with steel is more your style, this could be the career pathway for you. This taster will give a glimpse of career pathways as a boilermaker, welder, or fabricator in industries such as mining or construction. Students will get to immerse themselves in a fully functioning Engineering workshop. Try their hand at welding simulations, observe apprentices hard at work and get their own hands on the tools to make something to take home. 

Boarding call - all passengers.

Do you dream of travelling the world or inviting others to the doorstep of your world. The tourism industry is one of the most exciting career pathways which can take you all over the world, or to the most exciting parts of your own backyard. This taster will open your eyes to all the different opportunities out there and what skills you may need to launch into a career in the industry.  

One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish.  

Do you enjoy a good day out on the boat? Are you more of an underwater person? This taster will open your eyes to the science and intrigue of working in both the aquaculture and maritime industries. You will get to meet a few Dory's and a BIG barramundi or two, throw a net, even a line, and meet a few legends from the industry. 

 

Who runs the world? Kids do! 

Visit operating childcare centres and learn about the skills needed to succeed as a childcare worker in the industry. Hosted by North Regional TAFE, students will learn about training and pathways, whilst getting to engage with little people in childcare centres.

Green Thumbs of the future.

Do you want to grow your own food or help to re-establish native bush land and forests. This taster will take you through nurseries, edible gardens and give you an opportunity to talk to those who work in the industry about what it takes to be a "green thumb" and to care for your natural environment. Get your hands dirty and explore what it takes to work in the horticulture industry. Visit the NRTAFE edible gardens and select in season produce, before visiting the nursery and making your very own terrarium. 

 

Cows, flies, and blue skies.

Dusty sunsets, long days, the saddle and working outdoors. Sounds like your idea of a perfect dream? This taster will be your opportunity to gain experience the outdoors and find out what it is really like to work in Agriculture.  

Visit a working cattle station and learn what it takes to become a handy member of the team.  

This Taster includes full tour of the main camp, working one on one with horses before finally heading down to the Export yard to meet a few friendly bulls. Students learn about the pathways and jobs in the industry and the types of skills they may need if they wanted a career out on a cattle station whilst enjoying the full sensory experience of flies, stinky cows, red dirt, and a hot sun. 

From farm to table. 

Growing, producing, and transporting food is not a career for the faint hearted, but gosh it is a rewarding pathway! 

This taster takes you out on the land where all the magic happens and you get to meet growers, producers and climb a tractor or two. Learn what it takes to grow produce in one of the most challenging environments in Australia.  

Front of house or back of house?  

Have you ever been to a fine dining restaurant? Or is your favourite place to eat McDonald's? In this taster we will get you into the kitchen and a basic introduction to food service whilst learning what it takes to work in a fast-paced environment or a classy establishment. You will experience how to make a coffee, and even fix yourself some morning tea. Learn about all the various jobs whether it be in the kitchen cooking up a storm, or out the front juggling 10 plates!  

 

Land, sea, and sky – conserve it all.  

With a growing focus on our planet's future sustainability, careers in this field are in demand. Work in an industry where you are caring for land, country and the natural environment, this taster will be all about working with animals and the land to build skills and help preserve our future homes. 
 
Students will have the opportunity to talk to industry and learn about the various roles their potential career path may include as well as trying hands and practical activities.

 

Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.

Come on an artists trail and meet some magical people building careers in the creative arts space. Tour galleries and get to create your own masterpiece while learning more about the wide range of careers on offer in the creative arts space. As Albert Einstein said: "Creativity is seeing what others see and thinking what no one else ever thought." Same goes for careers!  

 

Sound check – 1,2,3?  

Are you a leading front guitarist, or more interested in making music digitally? Maybe you’re interested in engineering your sounds and making something new. 

This taster takes you backstage to learn what the less glamourous side of the music industry looks like and what sorts of skills you might need to sustain a career in the spotlight or behind the scenes in the music industry.  

 

000 - Police, fire, or ambulance?  

This taster takes you on a fast-paced journey into the fields of emergency services. Walk through the Ambulance substation, meet local firefighters and try your hands at a few live fire drills, visit the local Aviation Rescue fire station and get inside a big yellow truck, before heading to the local police station and learning what a real riot looks like.  

Supply chains and BIG warehouses!  

From the breakfast cereal you ate this morning, to the mobile phone or computer you’re reading this on, to the clothes on your back, global transportation and logistics industries have ensured products got to you on time, in the right condition and at the right price. This taster will show you the 6 stages of logistics whilst giving you a glimpse into a growing industry of jobs and roles. 

Making a difference, every day.  

Do you have a passion for helping others? Are you looking for a way to give back to your community an make a positive difference in the world? Community services is about changing and improving others' lives and in turn you feel a sense of accomplishment by helping others. This taster will introduce you to different employers and provide you with an understanding of what skills you might need to have to succeed in the roles. Come and find out the best fit for you! 

 

Save 1 life, you are a hero. Save 100 lives, you are a nurse!! 

Nursing is caring…but it takes more than a caring person to be a nurse. All nurses have at least one thing in common—they want to help people. Not only do they play the role of caretaker for their patients, but in some circumstances, they can also be a friend, a confidante, and a trusted adviser. It takes a special kind of person to fill all those roles the way nurses do. You may want to be an individual support worker whose job is versatile and outside of a hospital. This taster will show you through simulated facilities and help you understand what these roles could look like for you in the future.
