This qualification provides you with the essential skills to kickstart your career in the civil construction and mining industry. Are you a school leaver or young adult with minimal practical work experience? This course could be for you.
You will learn how to use a range of hand and power tools, small plant and equipment, carry out levelling, concreting and manual excavation, and a range of tasks related to planning and organising worksite tasks. You will learn about worksite health and safety, communicating within your team and completing jobs to outlined specifications. Successful completion of this course will enable you to enter the workforce with skills to work safely to industry standards.
Throughout this course, you will gain skills in:
- Reading and interpreting plans and job specifications

- Manual excavation, draining, leveling, trenching and concreting
- Disposing waste materials

You will attend eight one-week blocks of training. You will also need to complete some out of class activities, including prescribed reading and activities throughout the duration of your training.
This qualification is directly aligned with priority industry areas where jobs are today, and into the future. As part of the state government Lower fees, local skills initiative, from 1 January 2020 through to 31 December 2025 you'll only pay half the tuition fees (plus resource fee) capped at $1,200; or $400 if you're aged 15—24 or eligible for a concession.
